A flushing rig that saves €5,000 printheads

In use at aeoon technologies. Eight flushing programs on a touch UI built for gloves and noise, with a live view of every valve and pump in the machine.

What it is for

Industrial printheads cost about €5,000 each and turn into paperweights once the ink dries in them. aeoon had a rough mechanical concept for a flushing unit and nothing on the electrical or software side. A colleague built the mechanics; this is the rest.

Core technologies

  • Raspberry Pi:Powerful enough to run a modern UI and control all the hardware, small enough for an embedded system.
  • Python:The right fit for a device that needed solid logic without crazy performance demands — focus on the cleaning process, not low-level C++ plumbing.
  • Kivy:Python GUI library built for custom touch interfaces. Cross-platform, runs smoothly on the Pi, open-source license so the company could use it commercially.
  • GPIO & MOSFETs:Custom API controlling pumps and a complex array of valves directly from the Pi's GPIO pins, using MOSFETs for reliable electronic switching.
In an industrial setting, fancy UI doesn't matter. "Works every single time" and "dead simple to use" are the things that do.

Key features

  • Task-oriented touch UI:Big buttons, clear iconography, straightforward flow — designed for operators in a loud, busy environment, no training required.
  • On-the-fly program control:Adjust flushing duration and pulse frequency in real time while a program is running, reacting to how a specific printhead responds.
  • Live diagnostic view:Graphical debug screen that visualises the entire valve and pump system in real time.
  • State machine:Manages eight different flushing programs, each with unique valve combinations for reversing flow, pulsing, and waste management.

The original valve concept was scrapped part-way in and rebuilt simpler.
